Mariachi Las Olas de Santa Barbara is a community based, multi-generational ensemble of men and women who share the same passion of performing mariachi music. Its diverse membership of students, mothers, fathers and working professionals actively seeks to bridge communities through this music, performing at public schools, community fundraisers, cultural celebrations, concerts and private gatherings. Organized and led by Juan Zaragoza, an avid ethnomusicologist, educator, mentor, and music lover. In 2007, he was the recipient of the Santa Barbara Independent's Local Hero's Award. Here he shares stories about Mariachi traditions past and present, his personal journey as a musician, resources on instrument and apparel makers, traditional Mariachi apparel tailors, and Mariachi in the classroom.
